    Description

Antique Two-Gallon American Stoneware Shoulder Jug This impressive two-gallon stoneware jug is a classic representation of Victorian-era utility pottery. Standing 13 1/4 inches tall with a 9 1/2-inch diameter, the jug features a sharp, defined shoulder and a robust, hand-applied strap handle. The vessel is finished in a desirable two-tone glaze: a deep, chocolatey Albany-slip brown on the upper shoulder and neck, contrasted by a creamy, salt-textured Bristol glazeon the main body. This combination was highly prized for its durability and was the hallmark of American stoneware production at the close of the 19th century.

A distinctive feature of this particular jug is the impressed artisan mark—either an "8" or a "B"—located on the bottom exterior edge. Such marks were used by turners or kiln masters in large-scale potteries to identify their work or batch before firing. The jug's base is unglazed and shows a rich, dark-fired character with natural "kiln grit" and minor variations in the clay, proving its authentic, hand-crafted history. The surface displays a fine, authentic network of crazingthroughout the lower glaze, which has aged beautifully over the last 125+ years.

This jug is in excellent antique condition, showing the "honest" wear expected of a piece that once served a practical purpose on a farm or in a general store. It remains structurally sound with no major cracks, featuring only minor surface abrasions and small chips on the base rim that enhance its primitive character. Whether displayed as a standalone statement piece or as part of a collection of Americana, its classic silhouette and unique maker’s stamp make it a highly collectible example of historic American pottery.
