This vintage child’s rocking chair was manufactured by the Oak Hill Furniture Co. of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, a well-known American furniture maker active during the mid-20th century. Chairs of this type were commonly produced between the 1940s and 1960s and are recognized for their sturdy construction and traditional styling. The chair measures approximately 28 inches tall and 22 inches long.
The design features a classic spindle-back with a decorative top rail, straight round arms, and a scooped or “saddle” seat. It is constructed of solid hardwood and finished in a maple-toned stain typical of Oak Hill Furniture production. Turned legs and round stretchers provide both stability and visual balance, closely mirroring the form of full-size adult rockers in a scaled-down version.
This example reflects the standard Oak Hill style, which was sometimes produced with stenciled decoration on the top rail depicting children, animals, or floral motifs, though not all examples were decorated. Some variations were also made with added novelty features such as music boxes. The chair shows expected surface wear consistent with age and prior use and remains a desirable example of mid-century American children’s furniture.
