This cast iron terrier doorstop appears to be an early 20th-century example, most likely American and produced between 1920 and 1940. The sculpted form and deeply carved fur detail are characteristic of the period’s foundry work, and its hollowed underside indicates it was sand-cast in two halves and then hand-finished. The original paint is still present—aged, worn, and stable—with the classic palette used for terrier forms: tan, cream, and black. The expressive face, curled fur texture, and slightly oversized paws align with designs by companies such as Hubley, Albany Foundry, and National Foundry, though this example does not show the mold numbers typically found on Hubley pieces. Its stylized realism and pose strongly match unmarked regional foundry pieces manufactured in Pennsylvania and New England.
The doorstop measures approximately 13 inches tall and 10 inches wide, giving it the substantial size prized by collectors. The underside shows correct aging: an unfinished casting surface with long-term oxidation but no modern grinding or alterations. The curved base—painted in complementary green tones—was intended to mimic ground or grass, a design choice used in the 1920s–1930s to elevate the figure visually and add stability. The casting quality and distinctive terrier breed traits suggest it represents a wire-haired terrier or related breed popular in decorative doorstops of the period.
This piece has strong decorative appeal as well as collectible merit, thanks to its original paint, impressive size, and charming expression. It displays beautifully as cottage décor, kennel-themed décor, or as part of a cast-iron collection. The patina, wear, and coloration are consistent with age and provide an authentic, untouched appearance that many collectors prefer. A handsome and character-filled example of early 20th-century cast-iron craftsmanship.
