Description
This cast iron toy represents a classic American horse-drawn stake wagon manufactured by the Kenton Hardware Company of Kenton, Ohio. The wagon measures approximately 10½ inches in length, consistent with Kenton’s standard farm wagon model produced during the early 20th century. The set features a red open stake-body wagon with slatted sides, green spoked wheels and undercarriage, and a two-horse team attached by a separate double-tree hitch. The horses are modeled in contrasting finishes, one black and one light-colored with darker dappling, and are designed in mid-stride to suggest motion.
A silver-toned cast iron driver figure sits on the wagon’s front bench seat and is removable from the body. The wagon box is open at the top and rear, reflecting its utilitarian farm design rather than fire or circus variations also produced by the company. The bold red and green color scheme is characteristic of Kenton’s production during the 1920s and 1930s, when brightly painted agricultural toys were prominent in their catalog offerings.
The Kenton Hardware Company began manufacturing cast iron toys in 1894 and became one of the most recognized American producers of horse-drawn vehicles. Their stake wagons were staple models, reflecting rural transportation themes common in early 20th-century toy design. Based on construction, paint scheme, and configuration, this example dates to approximately the 1930s and represents a typical farm wagon form from Kenton’s interwar production period.
