Description

Here is a matched pair of framed lithographic prints from the David Ashley, Inc. Chinese Series No. 1 A and 1 B, copyright 1950, New Rochelle, N.Y., printed in Italy. Each print features two hand-colored scenes of traditionally dressed Chinese women, one tending a large blue and white fishbowl on a carved stand, the other seated at a table holding a fan with a vase of chrysanthemums nearby, with vertical Chinese calligraphic inscriptions above each figure. The prints are matted in rich hunter green and housed in matching black lacquered frames with an incised gold Greek key border detail, a design that echoes the chinoiserie aesthetic perfectly. Both frames measure approximately 14 by 12 inches and show light age-appropriate wear to the backing, while the prints themselves display some minor foxing consistent with their 70-plus years of existence.
