Description
This vintage level is a Goldblatt Tool Co. No. 07188 mahogany mason’s level manufactured in Kansas City, Kansas. It is a specialized tool designed for masonry and concrete work rather than general carpentry. The level features a tapered “humpback” profile, thicker in the center and narrower toward the ends, which provides strength through the middle while reducing overall weight. A series of bubble vials are set into the body, allowing the user to check horizontal alignment when laying brick, block, or other masonry units.
The body of the level is constructed from mahogany, a wood commonly used in traditional high-quality levels due to its resistance to warping when exposed to moisture from mortar and concrete work. Brass end plates protect the ends of the level from damage when tapping bricks or blocks into place during alignment. The edges are reinforced and the vials are mounted with metal surrounds, providing durability for job site use.
The level is marked “Goldblatt Tool Co., No. 07188, Kansas City, Kansas.” Goldblatt, founded in 1885, is known for producing professional masonry and plastering tools used throughout the construction trades. Based on the style of construction and branding, this example likely dates from the mid-20th century. The level measures approximately 78 inches in length and retains its original tapered mahogany construction with brass protective hardware.
