This mechanical donkey cigarette dispenser is a novelty item most commonly attributed to the Bancroft Manufacturing Co. of Toledo, Ohio, and dates to the 1920s–1930s. These dispensers were produced as interactive countertop or bar items, designed to dispense cigarettes through a simple mechanical action while also serving as eye-catching conversation pieces.
The cast metal donkey figure is mounted on an oval base and fitted with a vertical backplate bearing stenciled directional text reading “Rifle Sight Pass” and “Copper Butte.” These names are associated with locations in Colorado, indicating this example was likely produced as a regional souvenir or commissioned advertising piece rather than a generic catalog model. The presence of location-specific wording suggests targeted distribution, possibly for a resort, roadside attraction, or local retailer.
The piece measures approximately 8¾ inches by 10 inches overall and retains its original surface wear consistent with age and use. Mechanical novelty dispensers of this type were not mass-produced in large numbers and were often discarded after periods of use, making surviving examples increasingly scarce. This example represents an early 20th-century blend of advertising, tourism, and mechanical novelty, appealing to collectors of tobacco memorabilia, Western souvenirs, and period barware.
