General FAQ's

General FAQ's

What does an estate sale entail?
In most cases, estate liquidations include coming into your home and assessing the project. You hire our team of professionals; we sort, organize, research, price, market, and sell your items from your home. At the end of the sale, we will return or donate any items that did not sell if you so specify. We will list the items for 2 weeks, with multiple open houses for the public that will be facilitated by our staff. We can even list the house for you. We can do it all.

What do I do to prepare for an estate or personal property sale?
Throw nothing away, except for obvious trash like food and disposable items. Almost all estate sales professionals have one common request: DO NOT throw away anything at all, and let us do the dirty work. The collectors that follow Legacy Home Estate sales are interested in all manner of items! We price everything, and what does not sell we then trash or donate after the sale has ended.

How long will it take to give an estate sale? What happens with the leftovers? How and when does the sale end?
It normally takes from 30-45 days from start to finish to sort, organize, tag, stage, price, market, and sell all items. We provide you the information to help us promote your sale with your family and friends. Once we give you a start date, we keep it. We try to be as green as possible and donate any unsellable items to charity.

Who pays the sales tax from the purchases made by the general public who do not hold resale numbers?
We follow Kentucky state sales tax laws.
Kentucky tax rate: 6%
Required on estate sales: Yes.

Should I donate the general household items, throw away the junk in the garage, etc. before I have a liquidation?
One of the biggest mistakes clients can make is to dispose of items prior to hiring and using an estate sale company such as Legacy Home Estate. We can and do sell nearly all that you have, even if some of the items seem like junk to you. Please, do us a favor and leave every single thing in the house, garage, and yard until after we hold the sale for you.

What am I responsible for during the sale?
In most cases, absolutely nothing. That depends on you. Some sellers wish to be hands on. Others wish to give us the keys and walk away and wait for the check. We will contact you with updates as requested.

What happens if my family member has hidden money inside the house and it is found by the liquidator? Photos? Love letters? Personal papers?
We will set these things aside, along with anything else that seems too personal to sell without permission, and have the family come and retrieve it. We can also mail such items upon request.

How does Legacy Home Estate get paid from my sale?
Legacy Home Estate is paid by commission from the net proceeds of the estate sale itself, and we also earn a buyer’s premium. See our Services page for additional details about what we offer.

What if I decide I want to keep something out of the sale?
We will allow you to simply ask, as we would rather you have the item back. If the item is specifically under contract, we do have clauses in our contract stating that you must pay for any items you decide to keep after signing the contract.

How do you appraise art?
We can appraise certain art, which we do via detailed research. If we need someone more well versed in the type of art you have, we may hire a local appraiser.

How do you spot fake art?
That would depend on the piece, but there are many ways; age is one. While some fakes fool even the best appraisers and inspectors, we do our best to accurately assess each piece and consult with experts when we need to.How do you evaluate appraisals on jewelry? We utilize a local gemologist for our high-end jewelry to ensure we are listing our jewelry properly and give buyers confidence in the quality of our listings.
